the dark past...
We all have a past. Some of our pasts are darker than others. If we forget our past, however, we cannot move with intelligence into our unclear future. We would flounder about looking for answers where there are none. We would find guidance in our religions, our books, our revered people...but no true answers to the haunting every day questions of life. Simple questions, I mean. As simple as, "should I drink that? should I take that?" Our strength comes from our knowledge, and our knowledge comes from within. Our knowledge comes from information, and our information comes from experience, and our experience comes from outside. It is experienced, interpreted, transformed, brewed and stewed into information, and finally into knowledge. So saying, our own past makes us who we are, who we really are.
I have a less than glowing past, but it makes me the man I am today, good or bad. I take the information, the experience, and apply it to what I do every day, the choices I make. I don't make the right choice every day, because I'm still traveling along the knowledge continuum, still experiencing and learning. But if you want to know me, or yourself, for that matter, introspect. Listen to your past selves. Let the mistakes of the past become the successes of the present, and the hope for the future. Don't deny the past, don't cloud it over or obfuscate it into oblivion. It exists. It shapes and forms. It speaks and teaches. Just listen, closely and quietly.
